CIRCIA: A Law that Unifies

Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), a division of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), is responsible for leading the national effort to defend critical infrastructure from cyber-attacks. The Cyber Incident Reporting for Critical Infrastructure Act of 2022 (CIRCIA) was enacted last March in order to strengthen America’s cybersecurity posture and standardize proactive responses to protect critical infrastructure from cyber-attacks. Still not sure what it is? Here’s the skinny (infographic) on what you need to know.

CIR 2

CIRCIA and CISA play an important role in mitigating cybersecurity risks by:

  • Requiring critical infrastructure owners and operators to report cyber incidents to CISA, which helps CISA to track and understand cyber threats.
  • Providing CISA with the authority to issue binding operational directives to critical infrastructure owners and operators to implement cybersecurity measures.
  • Assisting critical infrastructure owners and operators with incident responses and continuous improvements.
  • Coordinating cybersecurity efforts across the federal government and with the private sector.

CIRCIA is an investment towards unifying public and private cyber defense efforts and establishing collaboration between government and industry to create an America resilient to digital threats.
